Even when you were in high school it was a bit of a pain. You had to go around to all the local businesses trying to find out who was hiring. Sometimes they had a sign out in the window, and sometimes they didn't. Either way, you had to go in, ask for an application, fill it out and hope for the best. Then you'd go to the next one and do the same thing again.
It might be easier if you could apply online - at least they might have a description of the jobs available. But to do that, you'd have to already know the business names in the area, find their website, look for a place to apply online, if they even offer that option. If it wasn't for the fact that you can do it on the internet, it might be worse than going from store to store.
No matter which route you take, you still won't know until you look at each business if they are even hiring, and if so, for which kinds of jobs.
And while you're hoping for the best, there are so many questions for which you may not be able to find an answer. Can they give you the hours you want to work? How much do they pay? Will the job be what you expect?
What you really need is a website that brings all of this information together and lists the kinds of jobs you want to find - hourly, part-time, local jobs.
Lucky for you there is just such a site. Snagajob.com
This is the perfect way to get a jump on all of the other students who will be coming home and looking for a summer job at the same time you will. You might even be able to have some interviews lined up for when you get home, before the rest of them even start looking.
